Education in camp communities inspires implementers to improve current system in the Bangsamoro

In the recent partners meeting for the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Component of the MTFRDP/2 on January 30, 2019 in Cotabato City, participating institutions were convinced of the need to improve the quality and system of education for the upcoming Bangsamoro.

Rhadzni Taalim, program coordinator of Bangsamoro Development Agency (BDA) for the MITFRDP/2 shared story of one ALS learners who is very happy by learning to write her name and count numbers.

Accordingly, the learner had difficulty in joining parents-teachers meeting in school because she was illiterate. Through the ALS, she is now confident being able to write her name at the registration sheet. She also learned basic counting of number that helps her for small business.

“I was moved by her story and I hope that through this partners’ meeting, we can come up with ways forward regarding Mindanao’s educational system with special consideration of the BARM,” Taalim stated.

In a message, Ana Zenaida, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent (ASDS) of in ARMM stressed the need for partnership to succeed with the education initiatives.

Carida Akis of CFSI spoke about their long partnership with BDA, which accordingly may not end even after this project cycle, and hoped to continue further.

Hashim Manticayan, learning and development officer of BDA talked about the education as one priority of the upcoming BARMM.

“Hence, it is important that as early as now, we have to plan and work together to improve and raise the educational standard long been affected by the conflict in our region”, Manticayan ended.

ALS, a component of the MTFRDP/2 aims to cater education needs of vulnerable groups, particularly out of school youth, women, orphans and indigenous people.

At present, there are 1,885 number of learners across the six major camps of the MILF where the MTFRDP/2 is being implemented.

MTFRDP/2 is a program partnership signed between the BDA and the Community and Family Services International (CFSI) which aim is to improve access of targeted communities in the conflict-affected areas in Mindanao to basic socio-economic infrastructure and alternative learning system.

This intervention is comprised of engaging the communities through a community-driven development and alternative learning system with an end in view of making those productive, participative and peaceful communities. Moreover, this is in line with the Normalization Aspect of the CAB.

MTFRDP/2 is supported by the Mindanao Trust Fund (MTF) with various donors such as the European Union, the government of Sweden, Australia, Canada, United States, New Zealand and the World Bank, which also serves as Trust Fund Administrator and Secretariat.

The Spanish Cooperation Agency for International Development (AECID) is also supporting the project.
